The Melfort Museum grounds will soon be growing.

The organization will be undertaking a land expansion project called “Looking to the Future by Expanding the Past”.

“Thanks to a generous donation from the Melfort Ag Society, we have acquired land to the west of our property,” explained curator Brenda Mellon. “That means we’re going to have space to expand our settler village.”

Mellon said the expansion will help provide the museum with an opportunity to display many of the artifacts that are currently in storage.

“The museum has over 44,000 items in our collection and this new expansion will allow [us] to tell more of the story about Melfort and our shared history,” said Mellon.

The first new buildings will arrive this spring.

“They’re going to include a newspaper [building], a telephone office, and a historic bank,” said Mellon. “But we are looking for help to make this happen.”

The museum has launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $250,000, and Mellon said they have sponsorship opportunities available at all levels.

The multi-year project is expected to take three to five years to complete.

Anyone interested in supporting the project can check out the museum’s website or give them a call at 306-752-5870.
