Spring thaw tips

City of Humboldt issues tips to homeowners about the spring thaw

Mar 25, 2025 | 8:00 AM

The warm weather is welcome, but the spring thaw and melt can lead to issues for unprepared homeowners.

The City of Humboldt is asking residents if their home is ready for the spring thaw.

“Flood damage can be quite costly. With the arrival of spring, it is important to be aware of the risks spring thaw can bring,” a city news release said.

They offered several tips for residents to keep the spring melt from affecting their homes.

Tips include shoveling snow away from the home’s foundation. It is recommended to shovel at least six feet away from the home.

Residents are also advised to inspect their properties for any potential obstructions that would prevent water from flowing away from the house.

Another tip is to ensure sump pumps are in working order and the outside drain line is clear.

Downspouts can affect the amount of water that is around the home. The city said in the release that downspouts should direct water away from the foundation. Anyone with a backwater valve should also make sure it is clear and works properly.

Eavestroughs should also be clear so melting snow can drain, and the downspouts should drain water several feet from the foundation of your home.

“Doing these simple, yet crucial things, will help protect your home, your neighbour’s home and the community from flooding and sewer backups during unpredictable spring weather,” the release said.
