Sask. Marshals first regional headquarters to open in North Battleford this fall

The Saskatchewan Marshals Service (SMS) will establish its first regional headquarters in North Battleford this fall.

The headquarters will house an Inspector, 10 Marshals, and civilian support staff.

“We look forward to working in lockstep with all of our stakeholders and partners including the RCMP as we improve public safety and security for everyone in the Battlefords region,” said Chief Marshal Robert Cameron.

Inspector Tim Garland has been named Inspector in Charge of the Battlefords regional HQ. Garland, a 30-year veteran of the Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.), has served as a First Nations Policing liaison, general patrol officer, and Major Crimes Unit detective.

During the planning process, SMS leadership consulted with local RCMP detachments and municipal officials to discuss how the service can improve public safety and help existing law enforcement efforts.

Ahead of the launch, public information and education sessions will be held to outline the SMS’s role in the region.

The City of North Battleford welcomed the announcement, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies.

“The success of the SMS depends on strong partnerships between policing agencies to avoid duplication of services and instead create complementary strategies,” said Mayor Kelli Hawtin.

“The city is confident that both the SMS and RCMP leadership will share this goal.”

The Town of Battleford has also expressed its support, citing the need to combat repeat offenders.

“Establishing a headquarters in our region is a positive step toward addressing habitual crime, which accounts for a significant portion of service calls in our community,” said Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie.

The Marshal Service is a new policing agency created by the Government of Saskatchewan and first announced in 2022.

It will be based in Prince Albert and plans to have 70 officers on its payroll by 2026 with 50 on active duty by the end of this year.

Regional offices, with North Battleford the first to be announced, are planned in key locations across Saskatchewan.

The mandate of the Marshals is to do complex investigations, warrant enforcement and to investigate crime in rural areas.

The first 10 officers are in the process of complete refresher training in Prince Albert.
