Mustangs’ Roberts commits to University of Guelph

Mar 28, 2025 | 5:20 PM

Melfort Mustangs’ defenceman Nolan Roberts has committed to a career after Junior A.

The team announced that Roberts has committed to the University of Guelph, where he will suit up for the Gryphons next season.

“I’m super excited and thankful for my time here in Melfort and just everything that Blevins and the whole organization and community have done for me,” said Roberts.

“I’m going to be majoring in engineering, and they have a very good program there, plus they were one of the very first teams to reach out. They are a very good match school-wise, and I also really like their coach. He was great to deal with when he was recruiting me, and I think he has a system that is very similar to the one in Melfort, so it should be a great fit.”

Roberts has been with the Mustangs since the beginning of last season, helping the team reach the National Gold Medal game last year.

He’s also been a part of a franchise-best regular season this campaign, as he looks to help guide the Stangs to another league title.

Roberts has 44 points in 113 games as a member of the Blue and Green throughout his currently ongoing two seasons.

A Brandon, Manitoba native, Roberts is excited to stay in Canada and face a handful of former Mustangs who currently compete on other teams across Canada in the U SPORTS league.

“Guelph isn’t too close to home, but it’s actually pretty close to my brother in Ottawa and my sister in Detroit, so it was nice to stay in Canada. We’re all close enough where we can see each other and support each other out there, so it’s nice to be close to family,” he added.

“I can’t wait to hopefully face a few former teammates in the future. There’s a good list of former Melfort players that I’ll be joining in U SPORTS, which I can’t wait to be a part of. If we ever meet down the road, just a heads up to those guys, they might get hit,” Roberts joked.

Roberts and the Stangs get back to action tomorrow night when they host the Kindersley Klippers.

Game 5 of the first-round series begins with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop on Saturday from the Northern Lights Palace.
