Mustangs look to avoid Game 6 in Kindersley, end series tonight at home

The Melfort Mustangs were 20 minutes away from Round 2 on Wednesday night, before a Kindersley Klippers comeback and overtime win forced a Game 5 tonight.

Melfort is now looking to respond from their first loss of the postseason and advance to the second-round this evening at home.

“It’s a huge game and we want to bounce back, we gave one up there and we beat ourselves, so we’re gonna come rocking into the Palace and we’re gonna finish this thing out,” said Mustangs’ defenceman Nolan Roberts.

“We have lots of experience here from last year alone, so we know it’s important to get it done as early as you can. Win number four is the hardest one to get and we saw that last year. The guys on this team that weren’t here, they’re gonna learn it, so we gotta show it as older guys that have been through it before.”

With a win, the Mustangs would become the second team to advance to the next round, as the Yorkton Terriers did so last night in overtime over the Melville Millionaires.

And after the Stangs seemed destined to do so a game earlier, they know what needs to be fixed to achieve success.

“It’s really important to replicate what we’re doing in the good times, but obviously, we’ve got to change some things up. I think statistically, our first two periods against them looked very good, but we have some things we need to change. We’re not going to dominate them just shots-wise, it’s going to be on the scoreboard as well, so we’re going to change that up and play a full 60 and show them our game,” Roberts added.

“We just have to improve our hardness a bit, we gotta play hard every single shift and not give them any energy. We’re a big team, and we can play heavy and physical, so we don’t want them to want to touch the puck.”

Puck drop will go at 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
