Mustangs advance to Round 2 with Game 5 victory over Klippers

The Melfort Mustangs have advanced to the second round of this year’s SJHL playoffs.

With a 5-2 victory on Saturday night at home, Melfort eliminated the Kindersley Klippers in five games.

“The boys were resilient tonight, they were pretty upset after game four, so coming back home, I knew they’d get it done. The biggest thing is those guys have great character and heart in there, they’re driven to win, and as you saw on the bench, we were pretty short, but the boys just fought through it and got a win,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“We’re happy to have a couple of days off now before getting back to work and preparing for Round 2, and we should be fresh and healthy by the time the second round starts next weekend.”

The Mustangs have now joined the Yorkton Terriers as the only two teams to have punched their ticket into the next round.

The Stangs will have to wait for the time being to see who their next opponent will be, as Flin Flon leads Humboldt 3-2, with Weyburn doing the same over Battlefords.

The Blue and Green are hoping to clean a few things up ahead of their next matchup, as Game 5 didn’t end as easy as they had hoped, following their original 5-0 cushion.

“The difference from game four to game five, was in game four we bit into the altercations and took dumb penalties, whereas tonight we held our emotions in check,” Scherger added.

“It’s obviously a tough score when you’re up 5-0 with 10 minutes to go because guys start to cheat the game a little bit. We had to tell them that it wasn’t over yet and that they had to continue to play smart hockey.”
