Walk a Mile in Her Shoes to return to the northeast

Apr 3, 2025 | 3:00 PM

A chance to raise money and awareness is coming up in June.

North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) is once again hosting Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on June 5 at Tisdale Town Square.

Registration will open at 11:30 that day, with the walk starting at noon.

“I’m very excited, and our board of directors is extremely excited to offer the event in Tisdale this year,” Executive Director Joan Bear told northeastNOW.

The event aims to raise awareness about domestic and gender-based violence, and sexual assault. It also serves as a fundraiser for NEOSS programming.

Men who sign up will walk a mile in red high heels as a symbol of the struggle against these serious issues.

NEOSS invites local residents, businesses, and sports teams to take part. Over 230 pairs of shoes are available for the men to wear. NEOSS first organized the event in 2013, and it’s part of the international men’s march.

Men participating in the event can walk by themselves or as part of a team to collect pledges to support NEOSS programs and services, including their Women’s Safe Shelter and personal counselling services for victims.

“We want to make sure that gender-based violence and sexualized violence are addressed,” said Bear. “The issue is there.”

Bear said it’s also a time for people to celebrate and walk alongside previous victims and survivors of that type of violence. The event is more than just a symbolic gesture, according to Bear. She said it’s about stepping into the shoes of someone who has faced unimaginable pain while showing empathy, understanding, and commitment to lasting change.

Prizes will be given to those who lead in fundraising at the event, including the “King of the Heel” for individuals and “Heel’s Angels” for teams raising the most money. There will also be prizes for teams having the most spirit.

Riverside Co-op will host a barbecue at Walk a Mile, with proceeds benefiting NEOSS. Entertainment will also be provided.

You can register by calling NEOSS at 306-752-9464 as soon as possible.

NEOSS hopes to raise $18,000 in pledges for this year’s event.
