2-0 Series Lead

Mustangs shut out Terriers in Game 2

The Melfort Mustangs grabbed a 2-0 series lead Saturday night in Round 2 against the Yorkton Terriers.

Melfort shut out Yorkton 3-0, staying perfect at the Palace this postseason.

“You got to be happy heading to Yorkton up 2-0, but honestly, I don’t think we were quite at our best tonight. We weren’t moving our feet and our back-check wasn’t good, but in the third period we started to dominate because we began to move our feet and get pucks north, so that’s what we have to lean on for game three,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“Tonight, Coombs was our first star without a doubt, he’s just driven and he was in the room just sweating like a dog. He just competes, and that guy’s character and his drive for the game is unreal. I’m super proud of him, especially having the boys back when stuff goes south, so good on him.”

Kristian Coombs had 28 saves for his first career playoff shutout, as the Mustangs have outscored the Terriers 9-1 in the first two games.

A big part of that is due to the fact that the Stangs have gone 4 for 11 on the powerplay and a perfect 9 for 9 on the penalty kill.

Scherger is expecting a much better Terriers team, however, now that the series is shifting to Yorkton.

“They’re a hard-working team, and especially when they’re back at home, they’re going to be smelling blood. We are too though, we’re hungry and the boys are ready to go. Especially on the road, you can’t weather the storm, you got to be the storm, and that’s what we’re gonna do,” he added.

“Special teams are a big part of the game, especially in playoffs. Some of those games, it’s going to be five on five, and it’s going to be tight, so it’s going to come down to special teams. Powerplay, good to get two goals tonight, but a couple of them we looked kind of nonchalant out there, which can’t be happening. On the kill, though, those boys just gave their all and blocked shots, they do anything and that’s awesome.”

Games 2 and 3 go Tuesday and Wednesday, beginning at 7 p.m.
