Humboldt-Watrous MLA apologizes after calling federal NDP leader a “terrorist”

A local SaskParty MLA has issued an apology after calling federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh a “terrorist”.

The incident happened as Humboldt-Watrous MLA Racquel Hilbert spoke about the provincial budget from the floor of the legislature after question period March 25. The Regina Leader-Post reports that Hilbert was discussing efforts by the provincial government to secure new trade partners and said the provincial and federal NDP were making those efforts more difficult.

“We did not hear the Opposition denounce their federal leader as being a terrorist in India and denounce the collateral trade damage to Western Canada,” Hilbert said.

She was then cautioned to “be careful” with her comments by speaker Todd Goudy.

“I recently made an inaccurate and inappropriate statement about the federal NDP leader. I apologize for and withdraw that statement,” Hilbert wrote in a statement to the Leader-Post.

The provincial NDP issued a statement Wednesday afternoon denouncing Hilbert’s actions that day.

“The Sask. Party government is supposed to represent all people in the province, regardless of their religion or culture,” said the statement released by Saskatoon-University MLA Tajinder Grewal.

“The comments made by this Sask. Party MLA are deeply hurtful and hateful to the Sikh community – a community which contributes so much to our province.”

Grewal’s statement said Saskatchewan’s motto is “From Many Peoples, Strength,” and that racism has no place in the province and “certainly no place in the provincial government.”
