Mustangs now one win away from SJHL Finals

Apr 9, 2025 | 2:21 PM

The Melfort Mustangs now just need one more win over the Yorkton Terriers to advance to their second straight SJHL Finals.

Melfort defeated Yorkton 4-3 last night, in Yorkton, during Game 3 of their second-round series. The Mustangs now hold a 3-0 series lead.

“The fourth one is always the hardest one to get done, so we have to clue into playing the right way in Game 4, and just playing Mustang identity. We had a great road crowd here, you could hear them getting loud, which is awesome, and we love the support, we love the noise, so keep bringing it Melfort, we love it,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“Game 3 wasn’t our prettiest of the season, but the biggest thing was we found a way to get it done. In the first we were pretty soft, and we didn’t play the way we wanted to play. In the second and third we had a better push and got better as the game went on, but still not quite what we wanted. Not quite to our standards, but we found a way to get it done and we’re gonna be better in Game 3.”

The Mustangs are now 7 and 0 against the Terriers this season and will be going for win number eight this evening to wrap this series up.

Melfort knows, however, that they will need their best to win the hardest one of the series against a Yorkton team that will be playing for their life.

“We never trailed in Game 3 and that was important and we hope it’ll be the same for Game 4. Coombs stood on his head and made some big saves, which is awesome to see, but we hope he doesn’t have to in Game 4. The biggest thing is clueing in right away, starting the right way, and playing the way we play,” Scherger added.

“We’re not weathering the storm, we’re going to absolutely be the storm, and that’s for a fact. We’re going to come out guns a-blazing, and you know, it’s going to be good to see.”

Puck drop is once again set for 7 p.m. at the Westland Insurance Arena. Pregame show will begin at 6:45 p.m. on 105CJVR.
