Hawks sign netminder from Calgary

The Nipawin Hawks have started preparing for the next Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) by filling a void in goal.

The club announced Wednesday that they signed 18-year-old Colten Scott to a Letter of Intent for the 2025-26 SJHL season. Scott played for the U18 AAA Calgary Buffaloes in his hometown last year posting impressive stats including a 2.75 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage in game games, those numbers elevated in four playoff games. Hawks Associate General Manager Dana Dirks said Scott has been a standout his entire minor hockey career.

“Colten’s always been a strong goaltender all the way through his career really,” Dirks said. “You go back to look at U15 AAA, he was always the guy. He played at the Alberta Cup as a U15, he’s played in the Telus Cup (U18 national championship) and really good numbers at the Circle K (largest U18 tournament in North America played annually in Calgary).”

The Buffaloes won bronze at the Telus Cup in Nova Scotia two seasons ago.

Scott is expected to backup Gage Roberts next season in Nipawin. Roberts took most of the net this season, but backup Nik Trakakis aged out and will now go to university. Dirks feels the addition of Scott will give the Hawks a formidable duo between the pipes for the next few years.

“It’s tough out there being a goalie because there are only two spots on every team. We are really, really happy to lock up Colten and bring him in. I think him and Gage can give us a really good pairing for the next few seasons,” Dirks added.
