We're Dancing

Mustangs sweep Terriers, advance to second straight SJHL Finals

Apr 10, 2025 | 10:16 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are dancing once again.

Melfort defeated the Yorkton Terriers 3-1 last night in Game 4, earning the sweep and advancing to their second straight SJHL Finals… the big dance.

“We’re back and we’re going to the dance, it’s awesome and all I can say is these guys work hard and it’s well-earned. I told you after Game 3 that we were gonna come out ready and we sure did, so I’m proud of these guys,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“I’ll tell you one thing, we’re gonna get this title back, that’s for sure. The boys want it and that’s all they’re saying, it’s still ours and we’re gonna get it back. We’re gonna get ready here in the next week, get some rest, get back to work, and then be ready for next weekend.”

The Mustangs never once trailed in their semi-final series against Yorkton.

The Stangs scored first in Game 4 in the second period, taking a 1-0 lead heading into the third.

The Terriers tied it early in the final frame on the power play, before Reilley Kotai responded for the Blue and Green, getting the eventual game-winner midway through the third stanza on the penalty shot.

Right after that, Melfort thought they added some insurance as Logan Belton snuck one through the glove side of Ethan Farrow.

After talking it over for a couple of minutes after the play, however, the refs decided to wave it off, calling it offside.

Because of that, the contest stayed 2-1, but it didn’t last long, as a Nic Andrusiak shot from the point went to the back of the net just seconds later, with that goal standing and putting the Mustangs back on top 3-1.

“All I’m going to say is the puck doesn’t lie,” added Scherger.

The Stangs will now wait for the result of the other semi-final series to determine their opponent.

The Flin Flon Bombers extended the series to a fifth game on Saturday, as the Weyburn Red Wings now hold a 3-1 series lead.

Regardless of their opponent, Scherger told northeastNOW his team is excited to get going and will be ready to defend their title.

“We’ll give the boys a couple days off, and then we’ll reset, we’ll get back out, we’ll focus in on who we got, we’ll get ready to go, and we’ll get prepped,” he concluded.

“Our community’s support has been unreal all year, so we’re excited to host Games 1 and 2. There better be lots of noise because the boys will be thriving and ready to go.”

This is the first time the Blue and Green have been in consecutive league finals since they won back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016.
