The bust of a legendary figure in the province is now in its permanent home.

Dr. Shadd’s bust has been moved from the Kerry Vickar Centre to its permanent place in the Melfort Hospital.

It was unveiled during the Gallery of Trailblazers Black History Month celebration at the KVC in February.

Dr. Alfred Schmitz Shadd was a pioneer in Saskatchewan near the turn of the 20th century, serving as a physician, journalist, educator, farmer, and much more. He was instrumental in bringing a second newspaper to Melfort, and also helped develop the Melfort Ag Society. Dr. Shadd is believed to be one of the first black doctors in Saskatchewan.

Dr. Yemi Laosebikan, who was the emcee for February’s bust unveiling and addressed the crowd gathered at the hospital, said that Dr. Shadd impacted the community and Saskatchewan as a whole during his time here.

Dr. Shadd’s bust was moved to the hospital this week, and the Melfort & District Museum thanked Dr. Yemi and WeCollaborate for partnering with them on the project.
