Mustangs host Spring Camp during Round 2

Apr 11, 2025 | 9:49 AM

The Melfort Mustangs held their annual Spring Camp over the weekend, despite also hosting games one and two against the Yorkton Terriers.

The camp was held prior to both games on Friday and Saturday before wrapping up on Sunday.

Roughly 100 prospects came in, making five teams, as they looked to impress the Mustangs organization ahead of Fall Camp, a couple of months down the road.

“Camp went really well, it was very competitive, a good pace, everything went really smooth, and it was a great weekend… fall camp will likely be whittled down to four teams, plus we’ll have some of our upcoming draft picks attending as wee, mixed in with some of our returning guys to make it a little more competitive and see how things play out,” explained Director of Player Development, Rick Oakes.

“Our success in the last year or two has definitely made our recruiting a lot easier because there’s a lot more interest in the program. It brings a little more profile to us, and I also think that our Saskatchewan group of kids are getting better every year, so we’re quite happy with how things are going, and the quality is very good.”

The camp had some familiar names spread throughout, with camp returnees and Melfort APs such as Josh Henry, Lincoln Rogers, Trey Markus, Cooper Atkinson, and Blake Girard.

Meanwhile, for those who were new to the experience, they got to witness a taste of what the program is all about and how this Stangs team is expected to compete after winning games one and two at home.

“It’s a huge bonus to have those games so the prospects can see them, and it’s a bit of a timing thing because we get our spring camp done and out of the way before the ice comes out. To have the team continue playing is great, and just for the players and their families to see this atmosphere and the way the team plays is phenomenal, it’s basically priceless,” Oakes added.

“We’re probably going to have anywhere from six to eight of these prospects in this camp crack our roster in the fall. We are going to have a big turnover just like last year, and we’re going to be looking for top-end guys to come in and fill these holes. They’re at this camp, so it’s just a matter of getting them all identified and going in the right direction.”
