The Green Party candidate in the Yorkton-Melville constituency is hoping that her familiarity with the riding will help her come election day.

Valerie Brooks grew up in the Hudson Bay area and has ties to many of the communities within the vast constituency. She currently lives in Saltcoats and has also worked in both Yorkton and Melville as a teacher. Brooks said being familiar with connected to the area means that she really cares about what happens and how issues affect local residents.

Brooks, who also ran in 2021 under the Green Party banner, told northeastNOW her campaign is going better this time around.

She said a core group of people she got close to in the last campaign are now executive members of the party in the riding.

“We now have an active electoral district association that has been working since the last election, and so we were ready to go, ready to hit the ground running this year.”

Brooks running in the last election has helped her name and platform become more familiar across the riding, she said. Brooks adds she has had people reach out and ask how they can help her during the campaign.

“I just feel so much more supported and visible…in this election,” said Brooks.

According to Brooks, one of the main topics she’s encountered while campaigning is constituents being tired of the divisive politics from both the Conservative and Liberal parties in Ottawa.

“They’re really happy that they have a choice in me that isn’t like that,” Brooks explained. She said neither she nor the Green Party agree with divisive politicking, and many people she has talked to want nothing to do with politics in any form due to the squabbling

Affordability also remains a major issue faced by people in the riding, as are the tariff and sovereignty threat from the United States. Brooks said people are anxious about what’s happening.

Brooks plans to continue door-knocking and mainstreeting throughout the constituency between now and election day April 28.

The riding encompasses communities like Carrot River, Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain, Naicam, and Kelvington.
