Rotary Melfort Sports Appreciation Gala set for Saturday at KVC

Apr 12, 2025 | 5:29 PM

Tonight, the best of the best sports representatives in the northeast are set to be appreciated at a gala hosted by Rotary Melfort.

The appreciation night will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, with dinner, speakers, and a silent auction slated for the evening.

“This is going to be one of our major fundraisers to give back to the community, and we’re really excited about all of the sports people that are coming, and the speakers are all geared up,” said Rotary Melfort member Gailmarie Anderson.

“There are so many volunteers, coaches and athletes in our area that are so worthy of recognition. Builders in the various communities, people who have started and kept going with all of the sports and everything, athletes and teams, and some special individuals that have gone on to provincial, national and international sports events. It’s just a wonderful opportunity to do that all at once.”

Keynote speakers for the event will be Trevor Blevins – Hockey, Fraser Will – Judo, Layne MacGillivray – Chuckwagon Racing, Julie Kozun – Paralympics Sitting Volleyball, Robin Luthi – Marathon Running, and Logan Ferland – Football.

There will also be sports scholarships given to 2025 high school graduates from the communities of Melfort, Kinistino, Star City, Naicam, and St. Brieux.

“Us at Rotary have been just amazed by what we’re finding out about individuals. There are kids, even from high school, that have gone over all over the world. There are people who have finished high school or university who are over in Europe, in sports, being coaches and leaders, and it’s just phenomenal,” Anderson added.

“Our speakers, they’re just from rural Saskatchewan, and they don’t have to be from big cities or wherever to accomplish these amazing things. We’ve got so many great coaches here and phenomenal sports people that help encourage our students and our young people, so it’s just really important to recognize that.”

It is expected that there will be roughly 400 people in attendance at the Kerry Vickar Centre for this evening’s Gala.
