Trojans hold late in the year Awards Banquet

Despite being a month removed from the end of their season, the Tisdale Trojans held their yearly awards banquet last weekend.

While it may seem a little strange to have it this late in the year, according to head coach Wes Rudy, there was a nice silver lining to the event.

“Ideally, I’d like to have it a little sooner, and we talked about that as a group, but in the same sense, too, it’s kind of nice to get back together a month or three weeks after and see everybody. You miss these guys, so it’s good to get back together,” he said.

“We were missing a few guys because there’s a lot of SJHL camps going on, but it’s more important that they hit their junior camps.”

There are also some members of the team who have been spending the past couple of weeks on SJHL teams as part of their playoff rosters.

Rudy explained it’s quite nice to witness some of his players extending their seasons at a higher level.

“It’s fantastic… a lot of the ex-Tisdale Trojans are also alive and well in the SJHL right now, deep in the playoffs,” he added.

“I think it comes down to the culture, the group, and them understanding that it’s okay to be a third or fourth liner and a penalty killer and those kinds of things. In that next jump, you have to do that before you get your opportunity, and I think my guys all understand that, and they’re just excited to play.”

As for those who attended the awards ceremony and were recognized, there were a lot of them.

Top Scorer – Carter Geysen + Pryce Thiessen, Top Defenceman – Blake Girard, Most Improved – Ramy Borowsky, Big Crunch Award – Carter Geysen, Most Dedicated Player – Sean Shiels, Goaltender Award – Wyatt Fleischhacker, Fan Favorite Award – Wyatt Fleischhacker, Scholastic Award – Cooper Atkinson, Hardest Working Player – Preston Hoppe, Community Volunteer Award – Justin Whitrow, Most Gentlemanly Player – Wyatt Jordan, Rookie of the Year – Jacob Tait, Most Valuable Player – Carter Geysen, Playoff MVP – Blake Girard + Carter Geysen, 3 Stars – 1st: Jackson Dunn, 2nd: Carter Geysen, 3rd: Eric Han.

“I think everybody had a good time, and we preach team all year long, so when it’s over, it doesn’t hurt for some kids to get some personal accolades for their contributions during the year,” Rudy concluded.

“The awards were spread out amongst the guys, but most importantly, were the comments, words, and letters we got for some of the volunteer work the boys did. Shows how good of kids they were, and that to me is really important to make sure the community appreciates what these kids do and the hard work they put in. The boys did this year, they really dug in.”
