Advanced polls open over Easter Long weekend

Preparations are underway in the federal riding of Prince Albert for advanced voting to take place this long weekend.

Returning Officer Don Vernon Mah said advanced polling runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on:

  • Friday, April 18
  • Saturday, April 19
  • Sunday, April 20
  • Monday, April 21

There are also advanced polling stations in Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, Choiceland, Debden, and Shellbrook. To find the assigned polling station in your riding, check your voter information card or use the Elections Canada Voter Information Service online.

“In Prince Albert, there’s going to be two polling places. At one of the places, which is the Alfred Jenkins Field House, there will be six different poll stations, so you need to pay attention to what’s on your voter card to know which station to go to,” said Mah. “The other voting station is at the Carlton Park Community Club and it simply has one [polling station] so you’ll know you’re in the right place if your voter card tells you to go to Carlton Park.”

Citizens can also go to any Elections Canada office by Tuesday, April 22, before 6 p.m. to vote early or apply to vote by mail, using the special ballot process. The Elections Canada office in Prince Albert is located at 3601 4th Ave. E and it’s also open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Once you apply to vote by mail, you can’t change your mind and vote at advanced polls or on election day.

“The difference in voting this way is that it’s done with an envelope system. So, it goes into two separate envelopes and gets counted at the office instead of at a polling place. If you request a vote by mail ballot and we mail it out to you, you need to return that ballot to our office by election day, Monday, April 28, by 7:30 p.m.”

According to Elections Canada, as of April 15, a total of 897 special ballot voting kits were issued to electors in Prince Albert, 177 were issued in Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River riding, 1,315 were issued in Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek, and 738 special ballot kits were issued to electors in Battlefords-Lloydminster-Meadow Lake.

Mah reminded voters that the electoral district of Prince Albert was redrawn since the last election.

“So, pay close attention to your voter card, especially those far east of the city near Carrot River and Arborfield. Those are now actually part of a different electoral district. We’ve also added Big River, Debden and most communities further west of Shellbrook this time. We’re also including in the redrawn line Candle Lake, Christopher Lake, Waskesiu and different places north of P.A. The south part of Prince Albert is not as far as it used to be, so pay close attention to your voter information card.”

Electors must prove their identity and address when voting. They can do so by presenting a card issued by a Canadian government that shows their photo, name and current address; by presenting two separate documents, such as a health care card with their name and a hydro bill with their name and current address; or, by having someone vouch for their identity and address and making a solemn written declaration.

The candidates for the April 28 federal election in the Prince Albert riding include Conservative incumbent Randy Hoback, Virginia Kutzan for the NDP and Liberal candidate Christopher Hadubiak.
