A pair of long-time local council members were honoured at this week’s Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) convention in Saskatoon.

Al Jellicoe of Tisdale and Melfort’s Doug Terry both received an Honourary Service Award at the convention.

The awards are given to elected officials in the province with 20 or more years of service.

“It recognizes their long-term dedication to, and involvement in, their local communities,” SUMA said at the ceremony.

The statement said the recipients demonstrate leadership in their communities and strive for an improved quality of life.

Jellicoe was recognized for 25 years of service on council in Tisdale, and he was recognized for his efforts in spearheading projects like the Water Treatment Plant, Town Shop, and Sewer Lift Station. He was also cited for his efforts to help retain and recruit physicians in Tisdale, and his work in advocating for economic development in the area. Jellicoe spent three terms as Tisdale’s mayor in his 25 years on council.

Terry received the honour after spending over 20 years on Melfort’s City Council, including a nearly year-long term as mayor following the resignation of Kevin Phillips after he stepped into provincial politics. Terry was cited for his dedication and concern for his fellow citizens. He spent several years as chair of the works and utilities standing committee during his time on council.
