MMIWG walk in Melfort in May

Apr 18, 2025 | 10:00 AM

Remembering those that have been lost and recognizing the challenges that remain.

The third annual Missing & Murdered Indigenous Walk will return to Melfort May 2.

Perry Opoonechaw with the Marguerite Riel Centre in Melfort said the walk will be similar to those in years past, and he hopes many people come out to take part.

“We’ve been…actively searching for people who are…directly impacted by it to come and share their stories if they’d like to,” Opoonechaw told northeastNOW.

Opoonechaw said it’s a reality that Indigenous women and girls have gone missing and have been killed, and it has happened, and continues to happen, everywhere. He added that the walk is important to send a message.

The event will begin at Memorial Gardens in downtown Melfort at 1p.m. on May 2. The walk will start about a half-hour later, and participants will be walking up to Burrows Ave. E., toward City Hall, back down to the Northern Lights Palace, and will head back toward Memorial Gardens.

A barbecue and entertainment will follow the walk from about 2 to 4 pm, and Opoonechaw said some speakers could also make an appearance. All proceeds from the program will go to the Marguerite Riel Centre’s summer youth programming.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the walk, and all participants are encouraged to wear any red piece of clothing.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ People. It is observed every May 5.
