222’s Fastpitch hosting local camp this weekend

Apr 19, 2025 | 3:47 PM

The 222’s Fastpitch program will be in Melfort this weekend to host a two-day camp for aspiring girls’ softball players.

222’s, which is run by two Melfort locals, always makes sure to return to its roots.

“It’s one of those things where, because we’re both from Melfort, we try and do stuff back here all the time, and we’ve always had a really good relationship with the Melfort Minor Softball Association,” said 222’s co-owner Keith Mackintosh.

“We’ve done a winter training program over the past few years, but it just didn’t work out scheduling-wise this year, so we thought doing this camp would be a great way to kind of get their season going.”

The camp runs on Saturday and Sunday at the North East Leisure Centre.

Over 20 kids ranging from ages 10 to 18 are expected to attend.

“It’s a skill camp, so there’s no pitching and catching involved in this one, or specialized positional stuff. There’s lots of defensive work, so throwing, receiving, fielding, hitting, and a little bit of base running. We’ll split them up into age groups, and we’ll also have some of our alumni out there doing some of the instructing, so it’s a way to kind of give our coaches a little bit of experience as well, dealing with different camps,” Mackintosh added.

“Our camps are the first window for a lot of people, it gives kids an opportunity to kind of see what we’re about, and we do promote our teams during the camps, and let them know when tryouts are, and that sort of thing. We’re always on the lookout for young players who show their talent but also show an eagerness or a desire to play at a higher level. If we look at some of the players that have been in our team program over the years, that’s exactly how it starts, so it’s pretty exciting.”
