Mustangs win Game 2, even Finals 1-1

Apr 21, 2025 | 12:14 PM

The SJHL Finals are all square after Sunday night.

The Melfort Mustangs responded well in Game 2, following a Game 1 defeat, earning a 3-0 shutout win over the Weyburn Red Wings to even the series 1-1.

“We came out and played exactly how we wanted to, just played our identity, played hard, and it showed tonight,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

Logan Belton had a pair of goals for the Mustangs, while Kristian Coombs made 22 saves for his second shutout these playoffs.

“I’ve said it all year, Coombs is a competitor, and honestly, just like last year with James Venne, Coombs is the backbone of our team. He’s just a guy that’s driven to win, and I’m proud of him,” Scherger added.

The series will now shift to Weyburn for the first time, as Games 3 and 4 go on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to Scherger, it will only continue to get harder from this point on, so his team will have to be the disruptors early and often.

“It’s a one-one series now, so we have to go there and get the lead, we have to go in there, especially in their barn, and we can’t just weather the storm, we’re going to have to be the storm. We’re going to come out guns blazing.”

The series has only amped up in physicality and chippiness throughout the first weekend, especially late in Game 2.

A fight broke out, and even more could of as well, potentially, but Scherger isn’t worried because of one simple fact in his eyes.

“We’re the heavier team.”

Puck drops for Games 3 and 4 are scheduled for 7 p.m., but are likely to start just after the 7:05 p.m. mark.

With that in mind, the pregame shows will most likely begin around 6:45 p.m. both nights, as each contest can be heard on 105CJVR.
