Tender issued for roof replacement project at Melfort’s Historic Post Office

Some TLC is coming to an iconic building in downtown Melfort.

Three flat roofs on the Historic Post Office will be repaired this year.

Council approved the issuing of the tender for the roof replacement project at a special meeting late last week.

Director of Community Services Rob Lok told northeastNOW the tender should be up on the SaskTenders webpage next week.

Administration introduced the capital expenditure request to fix the roofs during the 2025 budget deliberations, and they were asked by council to bring the request back to them once the design drawings were completed.

The roof repairs are expected to be extensive. They include removing existing roof membranes and insulation, repairing roof decking, and installing new insulation and membrane. The second-floor parapet also needs repairs and modifications to allow the membrane to be installed, and the attic access to the third-floor roof also needs to be widened.

The Governance and Priorities Committee report introduced at a meeting March 26 stated the roof replacement was estimated at $300,000 plus PST, engineering, or contingency. The tender bid will determine the actual cost, and the report suggested market volatility and other factors could lead to costs varying as much as 25 per cent.

“I am looking forward to the roof being repaired,” Lok said. “No more water infiltration into the building, and the space becoming available for public events again.”

Lok said the Historic Post office is an important fixture in Melfort’s downtown core, and the roof repairs are necessary to maintain the integrity of the building.
