Mustangs shut out Red Wings again, take 2-1 series lead

Apr 24, 2025 | 9:23 AM

For the second straight game, Melfort Mustangs’ netminder Kristian Coombs was mobbed by his teammates following a shutout victory over the Weyburn Red Wings in the SJHL Finals.

After a 3-0 win at home in Game 2, Melfort shifted its efforts towards the road, as the Mustangs took down the Red Wings 1-0 in Weyburn for Game 3 Wednesday night.

“In the first period, we came out a little slow, but in the second and third periods, it seemed like we had good control. Especially in the third period, everybody bought into the D zone and winning the hard area, so it’s awesome, and especially Coombs with back-to-back shutouts, that guy’s just a stud,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“Game 4, we gotta have a better first period, for sure, and then obviously with the two-one series, let’s take it home. The biggest thing is to keep playing Mustang identity, and then we’ll be just fine.”

The Mustangs’ defence in Game 3 was near perfect, allowing just 12 shots through 60 minutes.

As far as the series is concerned, the Stangs have allowed just two goals through three games, and none in the last two, but have scored just five times all series, three off the stick of Logan Belton.

“It was a one-to-nothing game, but we got it, and their goalie is doing a great job in net. The biggest thing, though, is we’ve got to get traffic, we’ve got to get hungrier in front of him, and get some more greasy goals,” Scherger added.

“Our penalty kill is 11 for 11 this series, their will, compete and drive is excellent, and they consistently sacrifice their bodies blocking shots. As far as the powerplay is concerned, the goals will come, we’re just 1 for 11, but it looks good out there and they’re moving the puck well.”

Game 4 will also go in Weyburn and is set for Thursday night. Puck drop will take place shortly after 7 p.m., with the pregame show starting around 6:45 p.m. on 105CJVR.
