Fire pit reminders

Humboldt Fire Department issues reminders about fire pits

May 2, 2025 | 12:43 PM

Local communities are reminding residents to apply for fire pit permits before firing them up this spring.

The Humboldt Fire Department (HFD) posted on their social media pages that residents must have a fire pit permit.

They said the pits must be constructed from a “manufactured, non-combustible receptacle constructed of cement or brick, or from sheet metal which is a minimum 10-gauge thickness (9/64 inch) and designed for use as a fire pit.”

The pits must also be covered by a heavy-gauge metal screen.

There are also regulations in Humboldt that fire pits must be more than 10 feet, or 3.1 meters, from any building, property line, trees, or combustible structures or vegetation.

Meanwhile, the HFD said the area on the ground surrounding the base of a fire pit, outdoor fireplace, or fire receptacle must be at least 40 cm (16 in), and must be kept free of vegetation or combustible materials.

A fire pit permit in Humboldt is $20/year, while a permit in Melfort will cost $10.

It should be noted that the towns of Hudson Bay and Kelvington, along with the RM of Kelvington, RM of Hudson Bay, and portions of the RM of Kinistino are under fire bans, along with much of northwest and north-central Saskatchewan. Check with your local municipality to see whether fire pits can be used at this time.
