Crews respond to wildfires near Wadena, Fishing Lake, Alvena; more fire bans

May 9, 2025 | 12:09 PM

An incredibly busy fire season continues across the province.

The Wadena Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) responded to a pair of calls on Thursday.

A fire just after 10:30 Thursday night at Fishing Lake First Nation was described as large and fast-moving.

The Wadena Fire Department said crews and trucks from WVFD and Fishing Lake First Nation FD battled the fire until it was contained.

The Fishing Lake fire department stayed on-scene to prevent the fire from jumping the back burn.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, and no buildings were lost.

The first fire of the day that they responded to was a field and bush fire about 12 km south of Wadena along Highway 35.

The grass fire had spread to brush and field, and high wind complicated the fight, and the department said farmer tillage helped fight the blaze.

The fire started under a power line, but the cause is undetermined. Crews were on scene for about two hours.

Meanwhile, the Wakaw/Cudworth Hoodoo Fire Department responded to an out-of-control wildland fire near Alvena on May 6 and 7.

The fire was threatening nearby structures, and a call for mutual aid was called to other local departments including Grant FIre & Rescue, Bruno & District Fire Department, Aberdeen Fire Department, Prudhomme Fire & Rescue, and One Arrow Fire Department.

Wind gusts up to 70 km/h and zero visibility led to the closure of several roads during the firefighting efforts.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

A fire ban is also now in effect for the Rural Municipality (RM) of Hoodoo.

Areas under the ban include the towns of Cudworth, Porcupine Plain and Wakaw, Wakaw Lake Regional Park, Resort Village of Wakaw Lake, and the RMs of Fish Creek and Porcupine.

Open fires, small firepits, and the burning of stubble and brush piles are strictly prohibited.
