Some local athletes are returning home with some shiny hardware following the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s (SHSAA) badminton provincial championships.

Student athletes from around Saskatchewan were in Estevan for the tournament on Saturday, which included local schools like St. Mary in Prince Albert, along with Canwood, Nipawin, Melfort, Tisdale, Carrot River, and Wilkie. Other competitors came from schools in Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Indian Head, Oxbow, Kipling, Englefeld, Whitewood, and Esterhazy.

Athletes were split into five divisions, including boys singles and doubles, girls singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.

In boys singles, it came down to a toon town showdown in the finals where Lin from Walter Murray took down Marion Graham’s Knox, 2-1 (21-12, 12-21, 21-13), capping off a perfect run. Curtis from LeBoldus in Regina claimed provincial bronze with a 2-1 (21-18, 18-21, 21-15) victory over Won from Estevan. Tisdale’s Dimaana finished fourth in Pool B with an 0-3 record.

Boys doubles saw the duo of De Padua and Doctor from St. Mary in P.A. capture bronze, defeating Regina Campbell’s Huynh and Nguyen in come from behind fashion, 2-1 (17-21, 21-15, 21-14). Meanwhile, Xu and Lai, also from Campbell, placed first with a finals sweep of Evan Hardy’s Li and Zhang from Saskatoon with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) win. Nipawin’s Martens and Brundage finished at 0-3, placing fourth in Pool B.

In girls singles, Campbell’s O’Neill cruised through the tournament, only losing a single set. That loss was to Nipawin’s Martens, who fell to O’Neill in a closely contested finals matchup, 2-1 (11-21, 21-12, 21-16). Canwood’s Schutte fought hard for bronze, but Grabowski from Bedford Road in Saskatoon managed to win in straight sets 2-0 (21-14, 22-20).

Campbell continued their dominance in girls doubles as Cau and Chen knocked off LeBoldus’ Francisco and Tacsay 2-0 (21-8, 21-10) in an all Regina clash for gold. The fight for bronze was the same story as Nipawin’s Moore and Spice dominated Jain and Zhao from Aden Bowman in Saskatoon, 2-0 (21-8, 21-11). Meanwhile, Wilkie’s Suchan and Leinenweber finished third in Pool A with at 1-2, while Tallon and Velasco from Nipawin placed fourth in Pool B at 1-2.

Xiang and Wang from Centennial in Saskatoon took bronze with a 2-0 (21-18, 21-19) win over Eng and Quangtakoune from Regina O’Neill.
