A long-time City of Melfort employee is retiring after over three decades in his position.

Herb Marshall has been Melfort’s Building Official for the past 33 years.

“This is a really noteworthy accomplishment,” Director of Community Services Rob Lok told northeastNOW. “For 33 years, Herb has done the same job consistently and professionally for the city.”

Lok said Marshall started in the position as a journeyman electrician back in 1992, and has “defined the Building Official role here in Melfort.”

“I really want to commend Herb for his outstanding contributions to the city,” Lok said. “Thirty-three years is a significant milestone…and I want to thank Herb for his dedicated service, professionalism, and knowledge for the job.”

With Marshall’s retirement, the City of Melfort is advertising for the building official job opportunity.

Lok said a building official needs to have considerable knowledge of building, plumbing, fire codes and regulations, and building construction methods and materials. The city is also looking for someone who is an effective communicator and who can “exercise tact and diplomacy when working with members of the public,” according to Lok. The Building Official must also visit construction sites and conduct physical inspections of properties.

“To qualify for the position, the building official needs to have experience with building design and construction, have a related trades certification or a building technology diploma, and they must have or complete the Saskatchewan Building Officials Association Level 1 building certification within one year of commencing employment,” Lok added.

He said a building official is vital to ensuring that residential, commercial, and industrial buildings are safe, structurally sound, and meet National Building Code regulations.

The city hopes to fill the position in four-to-six weeks.
