Coffee with Council

Community Coffee with Council held in Melfort

May 15, 2025 | 3:02 PM

The inaugural Community Coffee with Council at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort wasn’t well attended, but the initiative will continue.

The idea began in Humboldt, and Council in Melfort liked the premise when they heard about it at the recent Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) meeting. The get-together is designed to allow residents to ask members of council questions or raise any concerns they may have.

Melfort Councillor Tara Muntain told northeastNOW the coffee meetings are a great way to chat informally with local representatives.

“We’re just standing around with a cup of coffee and you can talk about if there’s anything that’s bothering you or even celebrate the successes that you see around the city that you’re really proud of,” said Muntain.

The informal nature of the meeting is an opportunity to address your local representatives without having to go through the process of setting up an official meeting, or to request delegation status at a council meeting.

“If you have questions, you’re not sure of something, not sure how something’s working, then we’re all here to serve you,” Muntain explained. “Come and ask any of us any questions.”

Muntain said council members are always approachable on the street but Community Coffee with Council is an opportunity to get all of council into one room in a relaxed atmosphere. Any questions that council members aren’t sure about at the meeting can also be taken back to City Hall and Muntain said they will follow up on the inquiries at a later time.

“It’s not always going to be the answer that you want, but It’s going to be the right answer,” she said.

The City will host another meeting in a couple of months and gauge the level of interest to hopefully make it a regular event going forward.
