Mustangs' 20s

The captain and playoff MVP: Ty Thornton player profile

May 15, 2025 | 9:31 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are deep into the Centennial Cup again, which means their eight 2004-born players only have a weekend left in their junior hockey careers.

The hope is that the next couple of days will be the best and most memorable times of their lives.

In the case of Ty Thornton, the last three years in Melfort have been a dream, as he now captains this Mustang squad, looking for their first National Championship in team history.

“Obviously, last year was special to be able to do it with that group of guys, but for this to be my last year and for us to be in this position again, it means a lot and I’m looking forward to trying to win it all this time around,” Thornton said.

“Since I got to Melfort, the culture and the group of guys that we’ve had were second to none, and I couldn’t picture myself on another team or with a different group of guys. From my first year all the way through until right now, I have made best friends for life, so this dressing room is going to be held with me for the rest of my life.”

In just three years with the Blue and Green, the man who now dons the ‘C’ on his chest has suited up 166 times and counting.

While he may have never heard of the small city in Northeast Saskatchewan prior to 2022, it’s now a place he’ll never forget.

“Coming in as a rookie, I didn’t know what to expect, going to a team with a lot of guys I didn’t know, and it being my first time moving out. As soon as I got here, though, I knew this is where I wanted to be and play. I’ve been super blessed with the opportunities I’ve gotten here, and I’m super happy to be able to say this is where I spent my junior career. To be able to go back to back in the SJ and now back with another shot at the Centennial, it’s been huge for me, and really a dream come true, to be honest,” Thornton added.

“I’ve definitely been hanging out with the guys more and more each day and just taking advantage of these last couple of days with them, and just making sure I get my goodbyes and all that, especially with just only a couple of games left, there’s nothing really to save it for. These last few days are going to be a straight grind, and I know I’m going to give it my all for these last couple of games I have here with Melfort.”

All in all, the Sherwood Park, Alta. native has produced 80 points so far in his days as a Mustang.
