Could Melfort Lions club return after decade-and-a-half absence?

A group is trying to restart the Melfort Lions Club.

A fundraising barbecue held by the group at Prairie North Co-op on Saturday raised $1400 for the Melfort Food Bank.

Members from clubs in Lake Lenore, Rosthern, Prince Albert, and Nipawin held the barbecue.

District Member Chair Beryl Bauer told northeastNOW the Melfort club was disbanded in 2011. Bauer said Garnet Davis, who was a leader for the Melfort Lions, moved to Regina, and the Lions disbanded soon after his departure.

“Members were getting older, and there were no younger replacements,” Bauer explained.

Bauer said the Melfort Lions and Lioness clubs were very successful during their time, raising money for a variety of community causes. The members from other local clubs thought it would be a boon to the Melfort area if the Lions club made a return.

Twenty members are needed to start a Lions club, and thus far, 14 have signed up for the Melfort Lions. Bauer said he has seen a lot of interest early in their effort to restart the Melfort Lions, with three people signing up on Wednesday when Bauer came to the city.

Lions clubs are known for their service to the community and raising funds for specific causes like hunger, diabetes initiatives, sight-related services, youth support, disaster relief, childhood cancer support, humanitarian efforts, and projects that help the environment.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Melfort Lions Club can contact Beryl at 306-231-9987 or approach Lions Club members from nearby chapters.

If a Melfort Lions club were to become a reality in 2025, the charter has to be sent in by June 20. An information meeting will be held in the last week of May or the first week of June.

“Then people can come to that information meeting if they’re interested and would like to see when they could join,” Bauer said.

He added that the district is paying for all new members for the next three years. The cost of dues is less than $10 per month, or $110 per year.
