Mustangs battle Cubs for spot in National semi-finals

May 16, 2025 | 3:16 PM

The 2025 Centennial Cup has now reached the point of do-or-die hockey games, as Friday is the first day of the playoff round.

Two quarterfinal games will take place today, one of which will pit the Melfort Mustangs against the Greater Sudbury Cubs.

“We’re all pumped, we’ve been waiting on this all tournament, and the guys from last year have been waiting on this for a whole year, so we’re ready to get going here,” said forward Zayden Sadlemyer.

“We know they’re gonna be good, and we know they’re gonna be fast, so we have to push the pace, play physical, and just play our game.”

Melfort and Sudbury are two of three teams in this year’s tournament who were also at the 2024 Centennial Cup in Oakville.

All three are now in the playoff round, with the host Calgary Canucks already in Saturday’s semi-final. A testament to each organization and their consistency.

Believe it or not, though, this afternoon will be the first meeting between the Cubs and the Mustangs, as they’ve been in opposite pools, two years running.

“We watched some film and figured them out a little bit, but honestly, we’re really just worried about our own game and sticking to Mustang identity, playing Saskatchewan hockey, staying heavy, and just sticking to it,” Sadlemyer added.

Puck drop between Greater Sudbury and Melfort is set for 4:08 p.m., with the pregame show beginning at roughly 3:45 p.m. on 105CJVR.
