Into the final four

Mustangs dominate Cubs, advance to semis against Trenton

May 17, 2025 | 8:34 AM

There never seemed to be any doubt about who was gonna come out on top in Friday’s quarter-final.

It was all Melfort Mustangs as they absolutely dominated the Greater Sudbury Cubs en route to a 7-1 victory.

“This was our best game of the tournament by far, and it’s how we look at our best. That is the way we play to a tee, an unbelievable full 60 minutes. I loved the effort, and now we’re in the semi-finals,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“We dominated, and I told the boys if we played our game, then we’d be just fine. Obviously, we did that, and it showed in the 7-1 result, so the boys are fueled up and ready to keep going.”

The SJHL’s leading scorer made his return to the lineup in the contest and had two points.

Reilley Kotai’s goal and an assist were a good injection into the group after having missed the last pair of games.

“It was good to see him back and scoring, he had one hell of a game,” Scherger added.

“We’ll be getting Shepherd back in for the next game after his suspension as well, and then hopefully, Belton, Cox and Roberts are feeling better too.”

Now, the Mustangs are in the semi-finals, as the top four have been set in this year’s Centennial Cup.

Melfort will battle the Trenton Golden Hawks at 7:30 p.m., following the other semi-final match between the Calgary Canucks and Rockland Nationals.

“Blevs and I are gonna do a lot of work watching video, but the thing about Trenton is they play with pace. They’re a fast team, but I think we’re going to take them with our physicality. Because we have the late game, we’re gonna be able to get a little bit of rest, and then it’s gonna be a fun one to get back to the championship,” concluded Scherger.

“Like I said at the start of the tournament, we have unfinished business, the guys are hungry and fueled, so it’s just one more game of playing the way we play, and hopefully, we can get back to the finals.”
