Another Heartbreaker

Mustangs drop second straight National Final

May 18, 2025 | 10:35 PM

Sunday night was another heartbreaker for the Melfort Mustangs as they dropped their second straight National Final.

Melfort fell to the host Calgary Canucks, the only team to beat them in this year’s tournament.

The Mustangs are now 0 and 3 in the Centennial Cup Final in the club’s 37-year history.

It was still an unforgettable year for the Blue and Green, as they set a franchise record with 46 wins in the regular season and needed just 14 games to collect an additional 12 playoff victories.

They became the first team since they did it back in 2015/16 to win back-to-back league titles.

Head Coach Trevor Blevins was named the SJHL and CJHL Coach of the Year, Nic Andrusiak was named the SJHL Defenceman of the Year, Ty Thornton was named the Playoff MVP and Reilley Kotai led the SJHL in both goals and points.

The Stangs also scored their first two goals in the Canadian Junior A Gold Medal Game, after having previously been shut out in their first two appearances.

Ashton Paul and Zayden Sadlemyer each had a goal in the 7-2 championship loss, with Kotai picking up a pair of assists, while Andrusiak and Nolan Roberts each had one helper.

Two straight silver medals in the 118-team Canadian Junior Hockey League, something only to be proud of, but one that may sting for a while, as they fell just one game short for the second time in the last 12 months.

Melfort’s 20-year-old players, who finished their final Junior game on Sunday: Ty Thornton, Nic Andrusiak, Zac Somers, Logan Belton, Reilley Kotai, Nolan Roberts, Zach Turner and Ashton Paul.

A 5 and 2 record overall for the Mustangs at the 2025 Centennial Cup at the Max Bell Centre in Calgary, Alta.
