Mustangs' 20s

The WHL Veteran: Zach Turner player profile

May 18, 2025 | 12:03 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are in the gold medal game of the Centennial Cup once again, which means their eight 2004-born players only have a single game left, win or lose, in their junior hockey careers.

The hope is that this very last game will be the best and most memorable one of their lives.

In the case of Zach Turner, he’s spent just one year in Melfort after spending parts of four seasons in the WHL. The Mustangs are his first time playing in Junior A, but it’s been worth it, as he now hopes to help lead the Mustangs to their first National Championship in franchise history.

“I had lots of fun coming here and playing with the boys in Melfort, it was definitely a cool experience, and I loved every minute,” Turner told northeastNOW.

“Coming to Melfort, I heard very good things about the team and the organization, so I definitely chose them because of that, and I knew that we’d have a good run. When I came here, the boys were awesome, and I believed in every single one of us to go for a run, but thinking about a championship was something I had to kind of put back, and just think about every step, one game at a time, but it was awesome to win.”

Turner had 115 games under his belt in the WHL with Brandon and Swift Current before he came to the SJHL.

Now, in 65 contests with the Blue and Green, including six at the Centennial this year, the Boissevain, Manitoba, native has 38 points.

“This is going to be a year that I’ll never forget, being my last year, and with the boys that I went through it with, there’s no better group that I could have done it with, these boys have been awesome, and everyone in Melfort has been awesome. To end it off here, the year I had and we had, it was truly unforgettable,” added Turner.

“This tournament too, it has been an awesome experience, I haven’t been to a tournament with a style like this since I was a little kid, so it’s been fun to hang out with the boys this much, and everyone has been putting their best foot forward to try and win another championship.”
