Hundreds gathered at the Melfort Fire Hall Wednesday evening for a free barbecue to celebrate another successful Melfort Mustangs season.

After being welcomed back from Calgary on Monday, the team was able to clean up and hang out with their fans on Wednesday.

Burgers, smokies, cake and pop were served for free, courtesy of Prairie North Co-op, to community members and the club, as they socialized with one another.

“We’re just soaking in the last few days here in Melfort. For me personally, the last three seasons have been amazing, and to be able to go back-to-back this year was something special. Obviously, making it to the finals in the national championship again was something special too, so just really soaking it in this last week with a lot of good community support,” said captain Ty Thornton.

“The welcome back we’ve received in these last couple of days just really goes to show how much this community really cares about us and how we’re really just treated like family. All of us get to feel like a pretty big deal around here, so it’s pretty sweet.”

The players felt like big deals on Wednesday as they were passing out hockey cards and signing autographs for most of the children that attended.

According to Thornton, it’s pretty hard to turn down an event like this.

“I don’t think anyone is ever going to turn down some free hot dogs and hamburgers, and it’s also pretty awesome to hand out our hockey cards and sign some things for the kids,” he concluded.

The Blue and Green organization will officially wrap up their 2024/25 season Saturday night with a championship banquet.

Another league title and national silver medal, deserved of a celebration.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Kerry Vickar Centre, with a midnight lunch set to be served.

Adult tickets are $20, kids ages 7-12 are $10, and 7-and-under is free.

To get your tickets, RSVP to the Mustangs Business Office by noon on Friday. The office phone is 306-752-2799.
