Terry Fox’s brother to visit Prince Albert, schools in Central Sask

May 22, 2025 | 3:38 PM

Terry Fox’s legacy of hope for cancer research will become a little more real to students in Central Saskatchewan, as well as to some Prince Albert seniors.

Terry’s brother, Fred, will start a series of visits with a presentation for seniors at Points West Living in Prince Albert. That will be followed by a private dinner.

Students across Canada are very familiar with Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, and schools still hold runs in September as a way to raise money for cancer research, which was Terry’s goal.

“It’s important to Terry’s family, along with millions of other Canadians, to do what we can to continue what Terry started,” Fred Fox states.

“After Terry passed away, our mom, Betty, took on the responsibility of sharing Terry’s story and often recounted Terry’s never-give-up attitude to thousands of listeners, young and older. I am humbled to have the same opportunity to continue what Mom did for over 30 years and to tell Terry’s story to new generations in Canada and around the world.”

Terry started his Marathon of Hope in 1980 with the goal of running across Canada, gathering donations on the way, along with much public support.

The osteogenic sarcoma cancer that took one of his legs at age 18 returned during the journey, ending his run and taking his life.

Determined to make a difference in cancer research, Terry ran 42 kilometres per day, through snow, rain, wind and humidity and stopped in over 400 schools and communities along the way.

Pushing to keep his brother’s work ongoing, Fred Fox will stop at multiple Saskatchewan schools next week.

Fox will kick off his trip on Sunday, May 25, where he’ll visit with the seniors at Points West Living in Prince Albert.

Then on Monday, he will be in Foam Lake, Wynyard and the Jansen Parkland Library. On Tuesday, he will be at the schools in Wadena, Quill Lake and Muenster.

On Wednesday, he will be at various schools in Yorkton, and he will visit Humboldt on Thursday, stopping at St. Augustine and Humboldt Collegiate Institute.

The annual Terry Fox Run will be on Sunday, September 14 in 600 communities in Canada. On September 25, nearly 10,000 schools will also run.
