Work continues as Star City School prepares for grade discontinuance

The North East School Division Board of Education has adopted the Star City School Transition Implementation Plan.

The plan is part of the ongoing process to transition the Star City School from a K-12 facility to a K-6 school, with the discontinuation of Grades 7 through 12.

The decision to discontinue the grades was made following a recommendation by the School Community Council (SCC) in September. The change will take effect on July 2.

Students will go to either Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) or Tisdale Middle and Secondary School (TMSS) in the fall, depending on where they live. Those living in Star City can go to either school.

Director of Education Stacy Lair told northeastNOW the superintendents have been busy during the year preparing for the transition.

“Some [students] have made that decision [to go to Melfort or Tisdale] this year, but there [are] the remainder of the students to make that transition for next school year,” Lair explained.

Some of the logistics being worked on include ensuring student transportation is taken care of, and the calendar for next fall, which will be the same as the White Fox and Arborfield K-6 schools. Lair said their schedule is adjusted slightly to accommodate the busing schedule.

Fine-tuning registration and any special supports students may need will also continue, as will assistance for any students feeling anxiety about the change coming up in the fall. While many of the logistics can be challenging, Lair said it’s most important to focus on and touch base with all families with students in the Star City school to ensure their questions or concerns are being addressed.

Lair said Star City school staff and the SCC have been working hard to help guide the transition period to make it as smooth as possible.

“It will be a big transition, and I think that the families are anxious and excited for what the future might bring there, and we’ll do our best to navigate through that.”
