Rain still a long way away

No reprieve yet as temperatures rise around province

May 26, 2025 | 4:25 PM

This week is set to be a scorcher in the province with the current seven day forecast showing daily highs of at least 26 C, and as high as 32 C. Besides a small chance of rain on Friday in Prince Albert, there won’t be much moisture this week.

It’s making for a tough start ot the year for farmers and wildland firefighters alike. According to meteorologist Justin Shelley, it’s going to be around for a while.

“So right now, much of the province is under the influence of an upper ridge of high pressure and that’s going to stay in place more or less for the duration of the week with some slight alterations. Temperatures forecast that are going to be well above seasonal all throughout the central region throughout the Prince Albert, Battlefords, Melfort area, with daytime highs forecasted to be into the mid to high 20s here.”

The temperatures are supposed to be peaking around Wednesday and Thursday with the hottest expected temperature hitting that 32 C mark in Prince Albert.

Sort of slow buildup in through the middle of the week, likely peaking in the Wednesday, Thursday time period, where those daytime highs have a good shot of cracking 30 C during the day. Overall we will see some reprieve from the daytime heat into the overnight hours, with generally speaking those loads getting anywhere from 10 to 14 C depending on where you are in the specific day. But it does look like we’re going to get light reprieve by the end of the week with cold frontal feature that’s going to go through.”

The further out you try to predict the weather, the less likely you are to have those predications stay accurate, but there does look like some moisture on the way for this week. Shelley said that despite Friday’s forecast showing a light chance of rain that will only hit Prince Albert, there is a chance that there could be a system coming through that’s a little more widespread that could potentially bring some more rain.

“There’s going to be a weaker cold front that goes through tomorrow, but not likely to produce any significant drop in temperature or significant precipitation, although there might be an isolated chance of a shower or thunderstorm. Very isolated risk through the day tomorrow, but on Friday it looks like a more significant trough or cold front is going to move through the area. I would say despite of what the (Environment Canada) website has, there’s probably a decent shot of some showers throughout the three markets there with that system on Friday, likely in the late morning into the afternoon hours with that passage of that front during the day. Likely a risk of showers and another risk of a isolated thunderstorm as well with that on Friday.”

Looking even further ahead, and the way weather patterns tend to trend mean that we could see some rain finally coming next week. The first week of June seems to be shaping up to bring some much needed showers.

“In the extended range as we head into the first week of June, there is the potential of a system sort of early next week that might affect more central and southern portions of the province. But that’s just sort of looking at the general trends of the larger scale patterns and what we might be looking at there. There is a chance in the first week of June of seeing a system that could bring some more widespread rain to those more central and southern portions of the province, but we’ll have to keep up to date with that and monitor the forecast moving forward over the rest of this week to gain confidence in the forecast for next week.”

As for the wind forecast, there is likely to be some up and down winds over the course of the week with nothing too major before Friday. Expect to see wind gusts no higher than 50 km per hour up until about Friday, but from there the wind speeds are likely to start picking up.

“That will likely be the case early tomorrow morning as well, and then we will see that shift of the winds to a bit more northwesterly, likely a bit weaker than what we’re going to experience today and tonight. With that feature on Friday, that’s the next chance of seeing more elevated wind gusts associated in the region, and with that, we’re likely going to see those wind gusts from the northwest on the order of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.”
