Speed limit request

Nipawin Council approves of proposal to reduce speed limit on Highway 55 east

The Town of Nipawin is reaching out to the Ministry of Highways to get a speed limit changed near the community.

Council approved a motion on Monday to lobby the province to reduce the speed limit on Highway 55 east to 70 km/h (just west of Mable Hill Restaurant), and to 50 km/h at the one-mile road east of Nipawin.

“The proposed transition distances mirror those at the north and south entrances to Nipawin, providing consistent safety measures,” a report from GM of Community Services Derek Seckinger stated to council. “Reducing speed before town limits may proactively reduce future incidents and support ongoing residential development.”

The report also stated there have also been “ongoing concerns” regarding engine retarder brakes being used by heavy trucks within town limits.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Michele Sorensen told northeastNOW the Ministry of Highways met with several municipalities in the region in April, and speed limits were discussed. She said Minister of Highways David Marit that any municipalities looking to reduce speed limits should send a request to the Ministry.

Sorensen explained why the town wanted the change.

“As there is new residential development further out of town to the east, council agreed that a reduction in the speed limit would increase safety,” Sorensen said.

According to Sorensen, the reduction would result in traffic coming from the east slowing down prior to reaching town limits. The request will now be sent to the Ministry of Highways.

Sorensen said they are unsure of what the timeline would be for the ministry to make the change.
