Evacuation notice in Creighton

STORY UPDATE: The Town of Creighton has issued an evacuation notice as a significant wildfire threatens the area.

The Town said Highway 106 is open to leave. Take the La Ronge cut across to Highway 2, then head south to Prince Albert. They added that anyone who needs a ride can gather at the Sportex Thursday morning at 8.

Nearby Flin Flon, MB and Denare Beach also under an evacuation notice.

A pre-alert for possible evacuation has been issued by the Town of Creighton.

They are advising residents to stay alert and “begin planning for a potential evacuation which could occur on short notice should the situation escalate,” a social media post indicated.

The wind has been in the community’s favour but the town expects a wind shift around midnight that could lead to heavy smoke in Creighton and surrounding area.

The town’s post said that Emergency Services suggests people ensure their vehicles are fueled and ready to travel. Should evacuation become necessary, residents would need to travel down Manitoba Highway No. 10 to The Pas.

Residents are advised to prepare an emergency kit that includes prescriptions, medications, important documents like passports and other papers, computers/laptops, valuables and meaningful items, personal items including clothing, toiletries, and phone chargers, and pet supplies.

Anyone that is vulnerable and would need assistance in event of an evacuation can call the Town Office at 306-688-8253.

An evacuation centre would be set up should the situation escalate, and the town will continue to provide updates on their social media pages.

The Beatty 2 fire is close to Creighton and Flin Flon, and hot, dry conditions are expected to persist over the coming days.

Meanwhile, the Town has announced that all ATVs, and recreational and off-road vehicles are now banned in and around the Creighton area.
