The Nipawin Hawks have signed three players to Letters of Intent (LOI) to wrap up the recruiting season prior to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) draft in June.

The club recently announced forwards Morgan Page and Mason Lowther have agreed to LOI’s as has defenceman Mattias De Zen.

Page is a 2007-born winger from Airdrie, Alta. that played for the U18 AAA Bisons program in his hometown. He scored four goals and added 18 assists in 35 regular season games this past season. Associate General Manager of the Hawks is Dane Dirks, he said Page brings a physical dynamic to the roster, something he feels was missed for Nipawin last year.

“Morgan is a big body guy that won their (Airdrie Bisons) hardest working player award this year, he’s a physical player. He’s more than that though, the points this year didn’t match his skill, he didn’t score a lot this year, but he was on a line and helped set lots up,” Dirks said.

Lowther played his AAA U18 hockey in his hometown as well with the Leduc Oil Kings in the Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL). This past year he scored 15 goals and added 15 assists in 37 regular season games. The Oil Kings had three postseason games as well, Lowther scored once. Dirks said Lowther brings several attributes to Nipawin’s roster.

“He played a key role with Leduc last season and was counted on in all key areas,” Dirks said. “He was also part of the team’s leadership group showing that he is a well-rounded player.”

De Zen comes to Nipawin from the Northwest Vancouver Hawks U18 AAA program. The Burnaby, B.C. product played 33 regular season games this past season scoring four goals and adding 11 assists from the blueline. The 2007-born rearguard played great in the playoffs last year scoring a goal and helping on seven others in just five games. Nipawin Head Coach and General Manager Tad Kozun recruited De Zen and is excited to work with him.

“De Zen is a good skating puck moving defenceman with a high hockey IQ. We are excited to have him on board with us. The way he can skate and his intelligence Mattias will be a great asset for our team,” he said.

The Hawks have said the recruiting process is complete and now the staff will prepare for the draft on June 10.

The Hawks have the second overall pick after the Warman Wolverines.
