Melfort Golf & Country Club receives handicapable golf cart

May 29, 2025 | 12:00 PM

The Melfort Golf & Country Club (MGCC) can now serve those with a disability who want to enjoy a round out on the links.

The course recently received a solo-rider golf cart, which allows those who are unable to walk or stand to swing a club just like anyone else.

The handicapable cart lifts the player to a standing position, allowing them to easily strike the ball. The cart works for both left and right-handed players and can drive all over the course safely, including in the bunkers and on the greens.

Melfort is just the third club in the entire province to have such equipment, with the other two being based in Saskatoon at the Holiday Park and Silverwood golf courses.

According to MGCC General Manager Kevin Ryorchuk, the cart has not yet been taken for a spin, however, many people have phoned the course and inquired about its use in the near future.

The cart was brought into the club thanks in large part to board member Darren Flaata.

Flaata spearheaded the attempt to get one to the club, something he’s done before with other sports and activities. Flaata’s daughter deals with cerebral palsy, and he has made things like archery and fishing accessible for her in the past.

“Having more inclusion and promoting this type of thing means a lot to me and my family,” he said in a Golf Saskatchewan press release. “I think anytime you can promote any type of inclusion and open up avenues to people, it’s going to benefit everyone.”

Flaata also assists at the Wapiti Ski Resort, where he takes kids with similar challenges skiing.

The solo-rider golf cart is now available to use for anyone at the Melfort Golf & Country Club and will be free of charge.

Flaata is excited to have this sort of cart now available in the northeast.
