Melfort, Humboldt teams win annual 222’s Fastpitch Shootout

The annual 222’s Fastpitch Shootout was held in Melfort this past weekend, and it was a pair of local teams who came out on top.

Eleven U13 and U15 girls teams came from across Saskatchewan, as well as a pair from Manitoba, with Melfort winning the U13 side and Humboldt winning the U15 side.

We had a really great tournament, and it was really nice to have one of our home teams win a final. We had a lot of fans out for that gold medal game, and we had a lot of support to help run this tournament,” explained Melfort Minor Softball Association (MMSA) President Jessie Spencer.

In the U13 side, the Melfort Spirit beat the Prince Albert Aces in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal game, while in the U15 side, the East Central (Humboldt) Wolverines took down the Regina Saints.

Then, in both cases, it was the Westman Magic (Brandon, Manitoba) that finished in second place, grabbing the silver medal.

The 222’s Fastpitch Shootout is typically the MMSA’s biggest fundraiser of the year, generating roughly $10,000, which is later used to subsidize skill camps and purchase equipment.

Although they have yet to generate a final tally, it is expected that this year’s tournament raised a little bit less, due to some weather late Saturday evening.

“We did end up having to cancel the skill competition Saturday afternoon, as we anticipated rain, so we moved up all of the games to make sure we got all of those in, and the rain and thunder and lightning showed up about 20 minutes after the players cleared the field for the last game on Saturday,” Spencer added.

“My guess is that with the anticipated rain on Saturday, we didn’t have quite as many people out as we normally would, and with the skills competition being cancelled, that usually draws the crowd too, so I don’t know if we made as much money as we normally would, but I still think that we did pretty good.”

The next couple of weeks will continue to be busy for the Spirit teams as they finish up their final tournaments of the season before Provincials begin on July 4th. A U11 team, two U13 teams, the U15 B team, and the U19 team will all be attending Provincials.
