Hawks Trakakis commits to Chatham University

Nipawin Hawks goaltender Nik Trakakis has committed to a post secondary hockey career.

The now 21-year-old is set to attend Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he will become a member of the Cougars.

“We’re thrilled to see Nik take the next step in his hockey career,” said the Hawks coaching staff. “He’s put in the work, stayed focused, and earned this opportunity. We know he’ll be a great fit at Chatham both on and off the ice.”

The Cougars are a member of NCAA Division III hockey and compete in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Trakakis, a native of St-Laurent, Quebec, suited up just six times for the Hawks in his career, posting a 2 and 4 record with a 4.15 goals-against-average and an .884 save-percentage.

Prior to his time in Nipawin, the six-foot, 161-pound netminder was in between the pipes in other Canadian Junior A leagues with the Virden Oil Capitals of the MJHL (Manitoba Junior Hockey League), as well as the Smiths Falls Bears and Navan Grads of the CCHL (Central Canada Hockey League).

Trakakis was 8 and 11 in 21 games in Virden during the start of the 2024/25 season, holding a 3.52 goals-against-average and an .879 save-percentage.

Meanwhile, during the 2023/24 campaign, Trakakis went 5 and 0 with the Bears, posting a 1.74 goals-against-average, a .909 save percentage, and two shutouts. He was also 2 and 1 in four contests with Navan, recording a 2.60 goals-against-average and a .920 save-percentage.

“Nik was a steady presence between the pipes for us, showcasing his skill, composure, and determination throughout his time in Nipawin,” the Hawks organization added. “We congratulate him on this well-deserved accomplishment and thanks him for his contributions to the team and the community.
