City councillor pleads guilty to assault, previous sex assault charge dismissed

Jun 25, 2025 | 10:44 PM

The sex assault charge against North Battleford Councillor Ross MacAngus has been dismissed and he has instead entered a guilty plea to assault.

As per discussions heard Wednesday at provincial court in North Battleford, sentencing will be held on Sept. 4 and there will be a joint submission from the lawyers involved.

The scheduling is due to the fact the victim lives out of province and will allow her the opportunity to attend in person.

The plea comes after months of delays and according to Brian Pfefferle, the defence counsel for the North Battleford councillor, the plea is to “another offence arising out of the circumstances.”

Crown prosecutor Sheryl Fillo accepted the plea. Both she and Pfefferle are expected to provide a joint submission on sentencing to the court.

While Pferfferle intended to enter the plea on MacAngus’s behalf, Judge Kevin Hill requested MacAngus speak for himself via phone call for confirmation.

“I just want to hear verbally that that’s your intention today,” said Hill.

“Yes, it is, your honour,” the councillor replied.

The resolution stems from a charge of sexual assault made against MacAngus in November 2024 following an incident that took place two months prior. Throughout the entirety of the case, MacAngus did not appear in court.
