Nipawin ballplayer reflects on career, All-American honours

A baseball player from Nipawin just concluded his college career at the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler).

Kyle Froehlich ended his college eligibility at the NCAA Division II level, as his team fell to the eventual champion Tampa Spartans in the Finals bracket of the College World Series (CWS).

“I think our approach in the playoffs was just to play hard, play loose and have fun, we’re out there playing a kid’s game, so don’t make it anything more than it is. Obviously, in those games, there’s a little bit more adrenaline and the focus is a little bit higher, but that’s what makes those games fun. You see that Tampa won it after beating us, and it just makes you think, dang, if we won that game, could we have been there too, but that’s part of the sport. I think we know that we had a really good team and a good season, so I don’t think you can really compare yourself to them, but you know that you were playing with the best at your level,” Froehlich told northeastNOW.

“In the moment, you don’t know what’s gonna happen after the season is done, so one of the things I told the guys while we were in our playoff run was to not think about what’s next, because at the time, none of it matters. We just wanted to be as present as possible and enjoy every single moment that we had together as a team, which was a lot of fun.”

Not only did Froehlich enjoy it, but he thrived in his final season, going a perfect 10-0 as a pitcher in 15 starts, posting a 2.75 ERA (earned run average) and 57 strikeouts in 75.1 innings.

Because of his dominant performance all year long, the 23-year-old earned All-American honours, helping UT Tyler to a program record 49 wins and their first appearance in the NCAA Division II College World Series.

“It feels really good, you have to trust the process and enjoy the process because there aren’t a lot of times, especially in baseball, where you get to see all of that hard work pay off. I think this was one of those moments that just kind of allowed me to celebrate myself a little bit and say how hard I worked and that I deserved it. It feels really good to be able to say that I was a Div 2 All-American this year,” added Froehlich.

“I think a lot of it for me was just figuring out routines that worked for me, and once I kind of found my routines, I was able to enjoy the process. Especially this year, playing down there, we had such a good group of teammates, I would call them all my brothers, and I wanted to play for them, so when you get something like that going, it makes it a lot of fun. Competing together, just trying to have as much fun as possible, and the results took care of themselves.”

Froehlich is now back in Nipawin, taking a couple of weeks to reflect, relax, and reset, as he’s still a little unsure of what exactly will come next for him.

For now, he’s just beyond grateful for the opportunities he got with baseball, and for those who helped him get there. Even as a small-town kid from hockey-dominated northeast Saskatchewan, he made his baseball dreams come true.
