Sask. Wildlife Federation helping landowners control gopher populations

Farmers and landowners struggling with an overpopulation of gophers can contact the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation for help.

According to the federation, rising gopher populations are a concern for many across the province. The pests are “a significant cause” of damage and degradation to crop land, the organization noted.

Landowners who are struggling with gophers can contact the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation’s office to be connected with members “who are ready to assist in controlling gopher numbers in a responsible and ethical manner.”

“We recognize the growing frustration gophers are causing in rural areas, particularly as they damage crops and create hazards for livestock,” Darrell Crabbe, the federation’s executive director, said in a statement.

“We’re proud to support our members in being part of the solution – helping our landowners while maintaining ethical hunting practices.”

The wildlife federation said the members participating in the initiative – which is supported by the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities – carry an additional $5 million in liability coverage, “and are expected to uphold the highest standards of safety, conduct, and landowner respect.”
