Melfort Mustangs assistant coach Tye Scherger, has accepted a position with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League.

Scherger, who rejoined the Mustangs organization two years ago after previously playing for the club as an assistant captain, is the Blades’ newest assistant coach.

“I’d like to thank Trevor Blevins and the Melfort Mustangs organization for giving me the opportunity to start my coaching career with them, unforgettable seasons winning back-to-back championships,” said Scherger in a Blades press release.

“I would also like to thank Colin (Priestner), Hilty (Steve Hildebrand), and Dan (DaSilva) for trusting the process and bringing me on [board] to be a part of the Blades organization. I’m super thrilled to get things rolling, [and] I’m a passionate guy for the game that brings lots of energy.”

In his two seasons as the assistant coach in Melfort, Scherger saw immense success, as the Stangs won league titles in 2024 and 2025, as well as silver medals at both of their Centennial Cup appearances.

He was also part of a Trevor Blevins’ staff that won the SJHL and CJHL Coach of the Year award this season.

“The Melfort Mustangs would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to assistant coach Tye Scherger for his dedication, professionalism, and contributions during his time behind the bench in Melfort. The Mustangs organization is proud to have been part of coach Scherger’s journey and are confident he will make a strong impact in Saskatoon. We thank Tye for all he’s done for our team and community, and we wish him nothing but success in this next chapter. Thank you, coach Scherger, and good luck in the WHL,” read a statement in a Mustangs press release.

“Tye joined the Mustangs staff ahead of the 2023-24 season and immediately brought a high level of energy, passion, and commitment to player development. His work ethic and attention to detail were evident in everything he did—whether it was during practices, on the bench, or in helping players grow both on and off the ice.”

A Macklin, Sask. native, Scherger will join head coach Dan Dasilva and fellow assistant coach Andrew Sarauer behind the Saskatoon bench for the upcoming 2025/26 season.

With Scherger departing, Melfort is now in search of his replacement. The team is seeking someone with ‘strong leadership skills and hockey knowledge to assist their Head Coach and General Manager.’

Interested candidates can send their resume, cover letter, and references to Melfort Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins by email at trevorblevins@sasktel.net. The deadline to apply is July 10th.
