An officer with the Meadow Lake RCMP shot his service pistol twice, striking a knife-wielding man in the torso on Flying Dust First Nation Sunday.

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investing the incident that took place on June 29 shortly after 5 p.m. In particular, they will examine the conduct of police and the circumstances that led to the suspect’s arrest.

Meadow Lake RCMP initially received a call from a girl reporting that a family member was intoxicated and aggressive. When officers arrived, they were immediately confronted by a 39-year old man, who advanced towards them with a knife in each hand. Despite repeated calls to drop the weapons, the man continued in their direction. One of the RCMP members shot two rounds, striking the man in his torso.

Police provided first aid until EMS arrived. The man remains in hospital in Saskatoon.

SIRT received formal notification of the incident from the RCMP at 5:53 p.m. that evening. The civilian-led agency will issue a final report to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending. In accordance with The Police Act, 1990, a community liaison will be appointed to support the investigation.

RCMP lay charges

While SIRT will examine the conduct of the officers, the RCMP continue to investigate the original call for service and have now laid charges in connection to the case.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s North Battleford Provincial General Investigation Section (GIS) determined that late on the afternoon of June 29, a man assaulted a woman inside of a home on Flying Dust First Nation. The victim did not report physical injuries to police.

As a result of the continued investigation and consultation with Crown prosecutors, the 39-year old man was charged with assault, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, and carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The accused has been remanded into custody, though he remains in hospital, and the file was scheduled to be spoken to in Meadow Lake Provincial Court Thursday.
